THE LOWDOWN

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

World number one Novak Djokovic made short work of old foe Stan Wawrinka on Thursday, beating the returning former world number three in straight sets. 34-year-old Djokovic is likely playing his last tournament before turning 35 later this month, where he will enter Roland-Garros as the defending champion after beating Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals last season and Stefanos Tsitsipas from two sets down in the final. Djokovic is a five-time champion at the Italian Open but he finished runner-up here last season in a three-set thriller against Nadal.

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME

World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Marcos Giron in straight sets on Thursday, backing up an excellent comeback victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round. The 21-year-old has now reached the quarter-finals of four successive tournaments on clay but he has lost at this stage in each of the last three: to Diego Schwartzman in Barcelona, Sebastian Korda in Estoril and Alexander Zverev in Madrid this time last week. Auger-Aliassime won his first ATP title at the Rotterdam Open back in February but his greatest achievement to date is reaching the semi-finals at last season’s US Open.

THE PREDICTION

This a wonderful setting for a first ever meeting between Novak Djokovic and Felix Auger-Aliassime, under the lights on Friday night at the Italian Open. 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime is still a work in progress on the clay but he is clearly improving under supercoach Toni Nadal and he is adding layers to his overall game all the time. It would not be a surprise to see the Canadian take a set here but realistically Novak Djokovic is a tough man to outmanoeuvre on your first try, despite what Carlos Alcaraz achieved last week in Madrid. The Serb has no natural enemies left in Rome after Rafael Nadal’s shock defeat on Thursday and he has looked rock-solid so far. Back the world number one to win outright.
