THE PREDICTION
World number one Novak Djokovic is a five-time Indian Wells champion, last winning here in 2016, but this is possibly the first time in almost a decade that he comes to the desert as a title contender rather than the clear favourite. The 36-year-old has not played competitively since losing to new rival Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, snapping his streak of four titles on the spin in Melbourne, and he lost in Australia for the first time since 2018 when Alex de Minaur upset him at the United Cup at the start of the season.
This opening fixture against world number 69 Aleksandar Vukic is unlikely to trouble the Serb but it certainly feels as if there are more threats this fortnight than have been since the heyday of the ‘Big Three’, with Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz and even Alexander Zverev capable of causing him stress in these conditions. 27-year-old Vukic beat qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki in two tiebreaks on Thursday and his powerful game could well force a tiebreak in the first set before falling away. Consider that option as a one-off but the sensible call is Djokovic to win in straight sets with a point to prove.
TIP: NOVAK DJOKOVIC TO WIN 2-0
