THE PREDICTION

Former world number 13 Nick Kyrgios laid out his stall as a true title contender at the Canada Masters after coming back from a set down to beat world number one, and defending champion, Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday. The 27-year-old can break back inside the top 30 on tour with another win here, after claiming the seventh ATP title of his career at the Citi Open last weekend, and he faces a decent chance of doing so against his friend and compatriot Alex de Minaur. 23-year-old de Minaur is on the cusp of breaking back inside the top 20 himself after recently claiming his sixth ATP title at the Atlanta Open and he has been in insatiable form this week in Montreal, beating two former top-10ers in Denis Shapovalov and Grigor Dimitrov. This is the first meeting on tour between the two Aussies but they will know plenty about each other’s games. They made a joyous doubles team at the ATP Cup a few seasons ago but despite De Minaur’s excellent recent form, breaking Nick Kyrgios’ serve looks like requiring a player from the very top of the pile. Back the elder Aussie to win outright, probably in two.
