THE PREDICTION

Former number one Naomi Osaka has impressed throughout her return to tennis from a long period out and she looks to be enjoying the process, and the journey, as she aims for the top. The 26-year-old was never at her best over the summer surfaces, however, failing to make it past the third round at either Wimbledon or Roland-Garros despite sharing four Grand Slam titles between the hardcourt editions in New York and Melbourne.

A straight-sets exit to clay aficionado Martina Trevisan last week in Rouen was in keeping with Osaka’s level on clay but she should still be able to come through this kinder opener over lucky loser Greet Minnen, who lost to Emiliana Arango in qualifying on Tuesday. The world number 69 is also far from her best in these conditions but she should not be underestimated with that unquantifiable second-wind behind her that lucky losers so often find. The high altitude in Madrid often aids less enthusiastic players on clay and if Osaka is ever going to win a title on the surface it would probably be here. Back the Japanese to win outright for caution’s sake.

TIP: NAOMI OSAKA TO WIN
