THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating, and hopefully thrilling, first encounter between former number two Paula Badosa and world number 40 Mirra Andreeva, who set a career-high of 33rd late last season. Andreeva turned 17 years old in Madrid two weeks ago, bettering her incredible breakthrough run to the round of 16 before defeat to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka last year with a quarter-final exit to the same opponent. The Russian beat in-form Jasmine Paolini and world number seven Marketa Vondrousova along the way to look the solid favourite here but Badosa is one spell of consistent fitness away from a return to the upper end of the WTA rankings as flashes of her game are still there when she can actually take to court. The 26-year-old took a set from the aforementioned Sabalenka before defeat in Stuttgart last month but a three-set exit to a qualifier in Madrid at this stage two weeks ago says Andreeva should have too much to lose here. Back the Russian to win outright.

TIP: MIRRA ANDREEVA TO WIN
