THE PREDICTION

16-year-old Mirra Andreeva burst onto the scene with a remarkable run to the round of 16 of the Madrid Masters last April but she blew that out of the water with superb runs to the last 16 at Wimbledon and more recently the Australian Open. The Russian set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd after Melbourne but she has played, and lost, just once since to make this a tricky opener against gutsy Katie Volynets, a fellow young player and yet six years her opponents’ senior. World number 131 Volynets will be backed well as a California native here but here is no doubt that Andreeva’s charismatic story is a tough one not to root for. A three-set exit to Danielle Collins in Austin last week was proof that the American is capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests but, assuming Andreeva is fit to play, the prodigal teenager should be coming through in straight sets.

TIP: MIRRA ANDREEVA TO WIN
