THE PREDICTION

Teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva started her incredible breakthrough season here in Madrid last year, reaching the round of 16 before losing to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka, and she has bettered that with gusto this fortnight to face the defending champion one stage later. The world number 43 beat Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Monday, her 17th birthday, to back-up an excellent straight-sets win over top clay-courter Marketa Vondrousova and she will take no fear into this rematch with Sabalenka, who has dropped a set in each of her three matches so far.

World number two Sabalenka came back from a set down to snap Danielle Collins’ 14-match streak late on Monday but struggling to get past Magda Linette and wildcard Robin Montgomery so far this campaign certainly leaves the door open for an upset here. The crowd will get firmly behind Andreeva’s irresistible hype train here and that could affect two-time Madrid champion Sabalenka quite negatively considering her feats here. The over-cautious pick for an accumulator is backing Sabalenka to win at least a set but consider the three-set option on its own to leave the result up to chance.

TIP: TOTAL 3 SETS
