THE LOWDOWN

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

World number 77 Miomir Kecmanovic had already set his best Grand Slam showing by reaching the third round but a four-set victory over 26th seed Lorenzo Sonego takes him into the round of 16. The 22-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 38th last Spring and he has the potential for more this year if he can maintain this bullish level. The Serb has been motivated by the treatment of Novak Djokovic, whom he was supposed to ace in the first round.

GAEL MONFILS

World number 20 Gael Monfils was in a proper match of it on Friday against the 16th seed Cristian Garin but he came through in straight sets for the third match on the spin. The 35-year-old has been vastly impressive so far in Melbourne, continuing in the form that saw him win an 11th career title at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago. The Frenchman is a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist with a quarter-final in 2016 his best showing here in Melbourne.

THE PREDICTION

This looks to be the toughest match of the day to call between in-form Gael Monfils and Miomir Kecmanovic as the young Serb continues to set new records for himself. The 22-year-old’s confidence looked shot in parts of last season but perhaps playing for the honour of his country’s greatest athlete, Novak Djokovic, has inspired him into realising the potential he had previously shown. Monfils has been simply outstanding so far but there were moments in his match with Garin that could have been pounced on by an opponent in better form. Monfils beat Kecmanovic in three sets at the Paris Masters late last year for a decent benchmark and he looks the favourite but this could genuinely go either way. Taking Monfils to win at least a set, or at least two at a push, looks a suitably cautious move against this anomalous level from Kecmanovic.
