THE PREDICTION
World number six Casper Ruud should be considered a serious title contender this fortnight after finally winning his first ATP 500 title, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to avenge his defeat to the Greek in the Monte-Carlo Masters final the week prior. The 25-year-old already had 10 ATP titles at 250 level, including nine on his favoured clay, but proving to himself that he can be more than ‘flat-track’ bully should see confidence boosted at this relatively wide-open Madrid Masters.
World number 66 Miomir Kecmanovic is far better than his current deflated ranking suggests and he proved it so with an impressive straight-sets victory over Zhizhen Zhang, who made the quarter-finals here last season, on Thursday. The 24-year-old leads Ruud 2-1 in their head-to-head but Ruud beat him to the Estoril Open title this time last season to turn the tide and it would be a surprise to see the level-headed but ambitious Norwegian falter here. Take Ruud to win outright, although straight sets are probably likelier than three.
TIP: CASPER RUUD TO WIN
