THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Alexandre Muller set a career-high ATP world ranking of 76th in July after a strong first-half to the season, particularly on clay on which he reached a maiden ATP final in Marrakech. The Frenchman comes into Shanghai ranked 80th in decent form after a three-set defeat to eventual Zhuhai runner-up Sebastian Korda last week and he looks the favourite in this first encounter with Kazakh veteran Mikhail Kukushkin. 35-year-old Kukushkin set a career-high ATP world ranking of 39th back in 2019 but he has spent the majority of this season on the Challenger circuit, currently ranked outside the top 250. Kukushkin qualified well this week to make the main draw but he has failed to win a tour-level match in over a year to suggest Muller can be backed to win outright.
