This promises to be a thrilling first round clash between clay-court specialist and popular home hopeful Martina Trevisan, who will be in her total element in these conditions, and a resurgent Yulia Putintseva, who moved back up to world number 41 this week. 29-year-old Putintseva has rediscovered her mojo impressively since the start of March, reaching the round of 16 at Indian Wels and then back-to-back quarter-finals in Miami and Madrid to set a real benchmark for what is possible in Rome.
