THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thrilling first round clash between clay-court specialist and popular home hopeful Martina Trevisan, who will be in her total element in these conditions, and a resurgent Yulia Putintseva, who moved back up to world number 41 this week. 29-year-old Putintseva has rediscovered her mojo impressively since the start of March, reaching the round of 16 at Indian Wels and then back-to-back quarter-finals in Miami and Madrid to set a real benchmark for what is possible in Rome. The Kazakh took the first set from compatriot Elene Rybakina before being edged out in three last Wednesday but former number 18 Trevisan is always capable of a sudden streak of wins on clay and she should not be underestimated in front of a raucous home crowd.

Trevisan's form coming into Rome makes this look comfortable for Putintseva, who has required top four quality, past and present, to oust her from her last three Masters events, but their most recent clash was edged by the Italian, from a 0-6 set down, at the US Open last summer 10-8 in the deciding tiebreak. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head but Putintseva has earned at least a set in both to offer a suitable way to avoid a result here.

TIP: YULIA PUTINTSEVA TO WIN A SET
