THE LOWDOWN

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

World number 41 Marketa Vondrousova reached the Gold Medal final at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer in a shock run of form eventually ended by Belinda Bencic. The 22-year-old has produced that kind of run before as she burst onto the scene in 2019 with a run to the Roland-Garros final before defeat to Ashleigh Barty. Two round of 16 exits both here and in Paris last season are signs of the Czech returning to that kind of form sooner rather than later.

PRISCILLA HON

23-year-old Priscilla Hon received a wildcard to the Australian Open main draw after a stunning comeback victory over Petra Kvitova at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago. The current world number 221 made her Australian debut back in 2016 but she won her first match here last season before a second round exit – her best showing at a Grand Slam so far.

THE PREDICTION

The Australian Open crowd back a home underdog as good as any on tour and wildcard Priscilla Hon’s exploits against Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka at Adelaide 1 earlier this month won her plenty of admiration. 31st seed Marketa Vondrousova should ultimately be too strong for the Aussie but this is not the gimme it might appear on paper. Take the Czech to win outright but it might be a shrewd one off to take Hon to win at least a set here.
