THE PREDICTION
This could end up a thrilling first encounter between world number seven Marketa Vondrousova, who appears to be rediscovering her best tennis after a tough few months, and teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva. 24-year-old Vondrousova conceded just four games to Shelby Rogers in a winnable fixture on Friday but she was vastly impressive in Stuttgart last week, beating Donna Vekic, Anastasia Potapova and then upsetting world number two Aryna Sabalenka before running out of steam in the semi-finals against Marta Kostyuk.
The Czech began to show the beginnings of an incredible purple patch of form, that would culminate in her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, around this time last season but Andreeva, who turns 17 years old on Monday, made a remarkable Masters debut here last season – reaching the round of 16 to announce herself a precocious rising star. The Russian came back from a set down for the second match in a row, ousting Linda Noskova after overcoming in-form Taylor Townsend, to look well capable of emulating that run but given her results the suitably cautious move looks to be taking Vondrousova to win a set to leave the victor up to chance.
