THE PREDICTION

24-year-old stunned the world, and herself, with an incredible run to the Wimbledon title last month to set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 10th. The Czech had previously finished runner-up at a major, to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019, but she had barely won a match on grass until this summer and just once at SW19 in her previous four appearances. Vondrousova beat Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina and then Ons Jabeur in her final three matches, barely putting a foot wrong on court whilst playing the underdog, and relative unknown, throughout but it remains to be seen how she fares in her first match back. 27-year-old Mayar Sherif comes into Toronto at a career-high WTA world ranking of 31st after a recent run to the Palermo Ladies Open semi-finals but the best of her results have come on her favoured clay so far this season. Vondrousova should be on her way down from the high of achieving tennis glory by now but this is certainly a match to leave out of an accumulator. Take the Czech to win outright otherwise.
