World number 35 Marie Bouzkova blasted past Amanda Anisimova at this stage of the Auckland Classic last week but she was as quickly put away by eventual runner-up Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals. The 25-year-old eased past Viktorija Golubic on Tuesday to look a solid title candidate here in Hobart but enigmatic Kazakh Yulia Putintseva came back from a set down to beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto to string together three important wins including qualifying. 27-year-old Putintseva is fare better than her current deflated ranking of 64th suggests but she endured a tough, intermittent 2023 to leave this season something of a rebuild. Putintseva beat Bouzkova in straight sets as recently as October at the China Masters but Bouzkova looks capable of levelling things here. Back the Czech to win at least a set as the likelier victor of two very capable, if currently under par, players.
