THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Mariano Navone will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 41st after reaching his second final in three tournaments, beating top seed Francisco Cerundolo in just under three hours on Saturday before a vastly impressive straight-sets semi-final, due to rain delays all week in Bucharest, over Gregoire Barrere. The Argentine finished runner-up to Sebastian Baez in Rio back in February to announce himself a serious threat this clay swing and he reached the semi-finals last time out in Marrakech before a three-set exit to eventual champion Matteo Berrettini.

World number 82 Marton Fucsovics won his maiden ATP title on clay at the Geneva Open in 2018 but he has since lost two finals, Sofia in 2019 and Rotterdam in 2021, to heap plenty of added pressure on the 31-year-old against a youngster with relatively little baggage. The Hungarian upset second seed Tallon Griekspoor in the round of 16 and he has lived a charmed life this week, avoiding the worst of the weather to play just one match a day. Fucsovics’ greatest strength is just that, his strength and endurance, to suggest the longer this match takes the better chance he has at victory. Take this head-scratcher to see three sets to leave the result totally up to chance.
