THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Mariano Navone will be one to watch this fortnight in Madrid after reaching two finals on clay in the past two months. The Argentine set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 41st after finishing runner-up to Marton Fucsovics at the Bucharest Open last weekend, backing-up a huge breakthrough run to the Rio Open final in February in which he missed out to Sebastian Baez. A loss to Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals of the Marrakech Open in between those campaigns means Navone has lost to the eventual champion in each of his last three tournaments, which could either bode well or badly for Alexei Popyrin here.

World number 46 Popyrin beat Stan Wawrinka to the Umag Open title on clay last summer to prove his ability on this surface and the increased altitude in Madrid tends to favour the bigger hitters, and servers, compared to other clay tournaments. This, and the exhausting nature of last week’s rain-delayed tennis in Bucharest, could see Navone rocked early. Back Popyrin to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: ALEXEI POPYRIN TO WIN A SET
