20-year-old Maria Timofeeva will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 93rd after beating an out-of-sorts Varvara Gracheva in straight sets on Wednesday. The Russian won her maiden title on her WTA tour debut last summer in Budapest and she proved herself more than a one-hit wonder with a brilliant run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January. 19-year-old Linda Noskova set a career-high of 28th after going one round further in Melbourne, stunning Iga Swiatek in three sets before eventually losing out to Dayana Yastremska in the quarter-finals. The Czech’s lost to her rematch with Swiatek at Indian Wells last time out but she has looked solid in recent weeks following her life-changing run to look the slightest favourite between two up-and-comers here. Back Noskova to earn at least a set from a likely three-set encounter.
