22-year-old Xinyu Wang will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 31st after upsetting 11th seed Daria Kasatkina in straight sets on Tuesday. The Chinese rising star started last season off in similar fashion before falling away behind contemporaries Qinwen Zheng and Xiyu Wang but a run to the round of 16 at the US Open last month was reward for steady work this year. It has taken players ranked inside the top 40 to oust her from her last three tournaments but home advantage in Beijing gives her that added boost that makes this a tough call against world number six Maria Sakkari, who started her campaign off in comfortable straight sets over Linda Fruhvirtova on Tuesday. 28-year-old Sakkari finally won her second WTA title, and a first Masters 1000, in Guadalajara last month to exorcise some demons on court and she has looked a lot more at ease in pressure moments since. It took a strong performance from Jessica Pegula to end her winning streak in Tokyo last week but Wang is playing very well right now. Taking the Chinese to earn at least a set is a tempting way to avoid the result here but Sakkari should be able to find a way through to the quarter-finals.
