THE PREDICTION

World number seven Maria Sakkari is yet to drop a set this week at the St. Petersburg Open as the top seed, with a strong performance over Elise Mertens on Friday putting her in good stead for only a fourth tour final. The 26-year-old reached the Ostrava Open final last season before losing to Anett Kontaveit, who plays Jelena Ostapenko later today. World number 56 Irina-Camelia Begu should not be underestimated, though, as she too has reached the semi-finals without dropping a set. The 31-year-old dismissed an out-of-sorts Petra Kvitova in straight sets on Thursday but at this moment in time Sakkari is a much tougher foe. The pair have won win apiece in this head-to-head record, with the Greek taking their most recent meeting back in 2018. Four years on she should be coming through in straight sets here but the outright win is a sensible concession.
