This could be the match of the day in Miami as a rejuvenated Maria Sakkari takes on world number four Elena Rybakina, both of whom may feel that their chances at winning this tournament were significantly improved by Iga Swiatek’s shock exit. World number nine Sakkari finished runner-up to Swiatek at Indian Wells two weeks ago but she has bounced back admirably, reaching the quarter-finals without dropping a set and coming well rested after Anna Kalinskaya withdrew from their match on Monday.
24-year-old Rybakina beat Madison Keys in straight sets for her most convincing win this fortnight but her game has been brittle all season, despite winning two titles in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi, to suggest this will need a decider. The Kazakh beat an out-of-sorts Sakkari in three tight sets at the WTA Finals late last season to take a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head but the Greek won their middle clash at Indian Wells two years ago, en-route to the final, and she has claimed at least a set in all three of their encounters. Take Sakkari to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
