THE PREDICTION
World number seven Maria Sakkari is yet to drop a set this week as the top seed at the Linz Open, seemingly opting for the lower-ranked WTA tournament this week in the search for successive wins. The Greek finished runner-up in two Masters events last season, to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells and Jessica Pegula in Guadalajara, and adding to her sole WTA title from Rabat in 2019 will surely be on her agenda this season. This looks a serious test, though, against a rejuvenated Donna Vekic. The former world number 19 looks like breaking back inside the top 20 this season if she continues in her current trend, with top 10 opposition required to oust her from her last three tournaments. The fifth seed is also yet to drop a set this week and she commands an impressive 4-1 lead over Sakkari in their head-to-head after beating the Greek in straight sets on her way to the San Diego Open final last October. Vekic is improving all the time on tour and she is a threat to any player when confident. Back the Croat to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance, although on the face of it Vekic looks the likelier to reach the semi-finals.
