24-year-old Maria Carle set a career-high WTA world ranking of 74th after an excellent run to the third round of the Madrid Open two weeks ago, upsetting in-form Emma Raducanu and 17th seed Veronika Kudermetova before falling to ninth seed Jelena Ostapenko. The Argentine won the Bisbal Challenger this time last month to highlight her readiness for tour-level clay and she qualified well this week to get some Rome practice in ahead of this first encounter with veteran Laura Siegemund. World number 86 Siegemund qualified without dropping a set to look competitive here but she has lost each of her last three on tour. The 36-year-old finished runner-up alongside Barbora Krejcikova in the Women’s Doubles of the Madrid Open last weekend but Carle has the much better singles form at this moment. Back the Argentine to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
