THE PREDICTION
World number 47 Magdalena Frech set a career-high of 42nd after enjoying a brilliant start to 2024, reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open before defeat to Coco Gauff and then making the last 16 in Dubai before a tight three-set exit to Elena Rybakina, but she brings a slightly concerning three-match losing streak into Miami. The 26-year-old should be able to get back on the horse sooner rather than later with a combative game for all surfaces but this looks a really tricky opener against the enigmatic Camila Giorgi, who rarely brings strong form anywhere before her occasional flashes of brilliance on tour.
The former number 26 is currently ranked outside of the top 100 after a woeful spell on hardcourts over the past nine months but she upset San Diego champion Katie Boulter at this stage of Indian Wells two weeks ago and her peerless groundstrokes should suit the fast air in Miami. Frech won their only previous encounter at Wimbledon two years ago but back the Pole to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
