20-year-old Ashlyn Kreuger set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 66th this week after an excellent few weeks on clay. The American won her maiden WTA title at the Osaka Open late last season to fast-track her breakthrough on tour but a run to the third round at the Madrid Open last time out included a huge upset over 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and she performed well at the Lleida Challenger last week. World number 55 Magdalena Frech, like Krueger, reached the quarter-finals of the Lleida Challenger to bring some solid form on clay into Rome but the Pole’s six-match losing streak on tour depicts a lack of confidence following a brilliant effort against Elena Rybakina in Dubai, exiting the round of 16 there in three sets in February. Current form suggests Krueger can reach the second round here but back the American to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
