Former number 22 Irina-Camelia Begu beat Linda Fruhvirtova in straight set sin her first match back on tour since suffering injury at the US Open last summer. The 33-year-old reached the quarter-finals here last year before being edged out by Maria Sakkari in three sets and she should be considered a big threat to most players here in conditions that heavily suit her game.
World number 20 Madison Keys is also working her way back on tour from a long absence, playing well at the Miami Open on her favoured hardcourt but struggling in Charleston last time out to fall in three sets against Jaqueline Cristian. The 29-year-old is a threat anywhere at the peak of her abilities but it could take a return to grass before we see her rediscover last year’s excellent form. Back Begu to earn at least a set as the likelier to edge through this clash in Madrid’s challenging clay-court conditions.
