This should be a thrilling first encounter on tour between world number 11 Madison Keys and number 19 Beatriz Haddad-Maia. 28-year-old Keys has played just once since reaching the semi-finals of the US Open last month, where she handed eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka a first-set bagel before losing the final two tiebreaks, but wins that fortnight over WTA finalists Marketa Vondrousova and Jessica Pegula are proof of her quality. Keys is well capable of finding her rare but insatiable rhythm this week but 27-year-old Haddad-Maia could be the perfect antidote as a renowned scrapper. The Brazilian also brings a two-match losing streak into the tournament, though, and we have not seen the best of her since a freak injury saw her nearly immobile against Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon back in July. Three sets are likelier than two whenever Haddad-Maia is involved but back Keys to edge this encounter with buckets of pedigree at this level.
