THE PREDICTION
World number seven Andrey Rublev got off to a shaky start on Wednesday but he came back from a set down to beat Soonwoo Kwon well enough in the end. The 24-year-old is playing with more confidence once again after winning his first title in just over a year at last week’s Open 13 with a superb performance over Felix Auger-Aliassime. If he can find that level he should have little trouble getting past world number 61 Mackenzie McDonald but the American has been superb this week in Dubai. 26-year-old McDonald is yet to drop a set this week, with a round of 16 win over Filip Krajinovic backing up a hugely encouraging defeat of the seventh seed Aslan Karatsev on Tuesday.
McDonald won the only previous meeting between the two in four sets at the Australian Open back in 2019 and he fares a decent chance at the upset here given his week so far. The shrewd move might be for the American to win at least a set here, given Rublev’s stutter against Kwon, but the sensible pick remains Rublev as the outright winner.
