World number 120 Lukas Klein and number 146 Pablo Llamas Ruiz both qualified handily to make their Madrid main draw debuts here on Wednesday. 26-year-old Klein has enjoyed one of his better starts to a season, vastly impressing from qualifying at the Australian Open through to a five-set epic against sixth seed Alexander Zverev in the second round, but his form has perhaps understandably drifted away since. 21-year-old Llamas Ruiz upset Federico Coria, the second seed in qualifying, on Tuesday to build on his recent career-best run to the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open, where it took eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz to oust him in tight straight sets there. Back the home hopeful to feed off of a partisan atmosphere to edge through this first encounter.
