THE PREDICTION
This could be a huge upset on Friday if world number 13 Taylor Fritz fails to hit the ground running. The 26-year-old improved on some recent choppy form with a solid run to the Munich Open final last weekend but a straight-sets defeat to Jan-Lennard Struff would have been avoidable if the talented all-courter was anywhere near his best level. Three defeats on the spin from Indian Wells through to Monte-Carlo came in stark contrast to a solid week defending his Delray Beach Open title in February but it remains to be seen how he reacts from an ultimately encouraging campaign in Munich.
22-year-old Luciano Darderi stunned Gale Monfils in straight sets on Wednesday to claim his first ever Masters-level win and he will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 55th for his efforts. The Italian won his maiden ATP title at the Cordoba Open on clay but high altitude in Madrid should level things against Fritz if the American brings his Munich form. Back Fritz to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
