THE PREDICTION
World number 19 Cam Norrie endured a tough season last year, seemingly finding himself suddenly exhausted by the hard work and resultant highs of the previous two. The 28-year-old still managed to pick up the Rio 500 title at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz but it was all downhill from there, although there were some encouraging signs in his victory for Great Britain against Australia’s Alex de Minaur at the United Cup last week. Norrie is desperate to lift the Auckland Open title, the city where he grew up, and he came heartbreakingly close to doing so last year in a tight defeat to champion Richard Gasquet.
There is less pressure this time around but more threats in the draw, with this a tough opener against up-and-coming Luca Van Assche. The 19-year-old is at his best on clay but he impressed in a tough battle through to the semi-finals of the Next Gen ATP Finals last November and he looks set to push on again this season. Norrie should have too much for the Frenchman in this first encounter, particularly with the home crowd supporting him as one of their own, but take the Brit to win outright with three sets likely.
TIP: CAMERON NORRIE TO WIN
