THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Sebastian Korda found the form of his career this time last season to reach the Adelaide 500 final, finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic in three sets before a huge run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. The 23-year-ol stunned Daniil Medvedev in Melbourne before a serious injury saw him miss out to Karen Khachanov in the last eight and that setback heavily affected the rest of his season despite initially looking even better on his return. It will be fascinating to see what the American can do this year with genuine top 10 potential hidden within a highly unpredictable player but a straight-sets defeat to Yannick Hanfmann in his first match last week in Brisbane does not bode well.
World number 46 Lorenzo Sonego is far better than his current ranking suggests but he too suffers inconsistent results, particularly since 2021, to make this a very tough call. The Italian beat Hanfmann in three tight sets on Tuesday to offer a useful direct comparison, and he leads Korda 3-1 in their head-to-head, but Korda’s best tennis is certainly the better of the two. Whilst we wait to see where next the American will blossom, it is probably worth backing Sonego to earn at least a set with the better recent form. Alternatively, leave this head-scratcher alone altogether.
