THE PREDICTION
World number 47 Miomir Kecmanovic has enjoyed two of the best runs of his career here at Indian Wells, twice reaching the quarter-finals in 2019 and in 2022 - the latter of which he lost in three tight sets to eventual champion Taylor Fritz. The 24-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Mexican Open last week before a consummate defeat to Jack Draper but he has fluctuated wildly between deep campaigns and early exits over the past few seasons, with January’s excellent round of 16 exit at the Australian Open followed by two first round exits.
World number 55 Lorenzo Sonego is another player capable of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests, which a three-set exit to Daniil Medvedev in Dubai last week attests to. The Italian struggles to find enough of his best tennis within a match to put them away consistently but he took Carlos Alcaraz to four tight sets before defeat in Melbourne in January to prove what he can do in these conditions. Kecmanovic leads their tour-level head-to-head record 2-1 with wins in each of their last two encounters but back the Serb to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
