THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Jordan Thompson is just four places behind his career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd after starting 2024 as strongly as he left 2023. The Aussie rode his luck a little against returning former number one Rafael Nadal last week in Brisbane but he put himself in the position to profit from the Spaniard’s injury late-on in the match with tireless tennis that could see him finally pick up a maiden title at this level this year. A straight-sets defeat in the semi-finals to eventual Brisbane champion Grigor Dimitrov suggests he has enough to be a factor here in Adelaide and he started in fine form with a consummate straight-sets victory over Facundo Diaz Acosta.
World number 25 Lorenzo Musetti received a bye to the round of 16 as the fourth seed here but the Italian very far from the level that put him in the top 20 last season. The 21-year-old should snap out of his current funk soon but one win from his last six matches says Thompson can be backed to delight the home crowd with an outright victory here.
