THE PREDICTION
World number 31 Alexander Bublik came back from a set down to beat Dan Evans with his usual mixture of madcap serving and effortless groundstrokes, fizzing down 21 aces to 13 double faults to look a serious title contender in Adelaide. The 26-year-old won his most prestigious title yet at the Halle Open last June with a near=perfect week of his rare best all in one place but he looks to be maturing after not only taking that form within a set of making the quarter-finals of Wimbledon but later claiming a third title at the European Open, with only a short period of poor form in between trophies.
World number 25 Lorenzo Musetti is another of the tour’s streakier players but he impressed in a surprise straight-sets victory over in-form Jordan Thompson on Wednesday, claiming only his second win in his last seven matches. The Italian is a hugely gifted clay-courter still looking for serious results on a hardcourt whilst Bublik’s gung-ho game totally suits these conditions. The Kazakh was in control of their previous match before Musetti retired injured back in 2022 and Bublik can be backed to come out on top of this second meeting too.
