THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Lin Zhu made full use of the controversial wildcard at the WTA Elite Trophy to stun fifth seed Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Tuesday, delighting home crowds in Zhuhai. The 29-year-old had reached two WTA finals this season, winning her first for a maiden title at the Hua Hin Championships, but she snapped a four-match losing streak on Tuesday that stretched back to finishing runner-up to Ashlyn Krueger in Osaka. 24-year-old Liudmila Samsonova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th back in February but she looked set to drop back after failing to defend each of her three titles from 2022 this autumn. However, two runners-up places at Masters events this season in Montreal and more recently Beijing both saw wins over Elena Rybakina amongst other impressive scalps to prove her pedigree in these conditions. Lin Zhu may yet sneak through to the semi-finals backed by the home crowd but Samsonova should be too good for her in this first meeting between the two. Take the Russian to win outright.
