THE PREDICTION

World number five Jessica Pegula was in control of her second round match over Lin Zhu before her opponent was forced to retire in the second set. The 30-year-old continues to struggle in doubles, however, as her former number one pairing with Coco Gauff suffered another surprising early exit on Thursday. Pegula spilt with long-term coach David Witt after a shock second round exit at the Australian Open in January and she has yet to see a significant upturn in form to make this first meeting with Leylah Fernandez hugely intriguing.

Former number 13 Fernandez ended last season in the sort of form that suggested she could take 2024 by storm, almost single-handedly dragging Canada to their first Billie Jean King Cup title, but she has struggled for consistency so far this year. The 21-year-old beat Emiliana Arango comfortably on Saturday to snap a three-match losing streak but a run to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Masters before that poor spell is proof of what she can do here with some rhythm. Home advantage, and perhaps the lack of doubles to distract her, hands Pegula a slight edge here but Fernandez is often at her best against the better players. Take Pegula to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: JESSICA PEGULA TO WIN A SET
