THE PREDICTION

This should be an entertaining, scrappy battle between two clay-court aficionados currently out of form. Former number 26 Lauren Davis is currently ranked outside of the top 160 on tour after ending her season early last year, a season that had started so well with her second WTA title claimed at the Hobart International.

27-year-old Mayar Sherif set a career-high WTA world ranking of 31st last summer after an excellent clay swing saw her lift several Challenger titles and reach the quarter-finals here in Madrid, stunning four tough foes before taking eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka to three in defeat. The Egyptian has failed to win a tour-level match since August, a run of nine losses on the spin, but she has looked competitive since returning from injury in Charleston earlier this month. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head but Sherif won their only meeting on clay and she took at least a set in both encounters. Back the Egyptian to do so again here to leave the result up to chance.

TIP: MAYAR SHERIF TO WIN A SET
