Former world number one Angelique Kerber reached the round of 16 at Indian Wells in March to prove a return to somewhere near the top of the sport is possible, although a three-match losing streak since maintains that it will be tough. The 36-year-old was never at her best on clay, with her counter-punching game preferring the whippier conditions of grass and hard, but she is well capable of challenging most players anywhere at her best.
