THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating quarter-final clash between in-form Laura Siegemund, riding the momentum from Germany’s victory at the United Cup last week, and former number eight Daria Kasatkina, who is desperately clawing back her best tennis. 35-year-old Siegemund beat Ana Bogdan in straight sets on Wednesday to back-up a huge upset over seventh seed Liudmila Samsonova in the first round and she has yet to lose a match in 2024 - winning all three of Germany’s crucial doubles matches at the United Cup alongside Alexander Zverev as well as both played alongside Barbora Krejcikova this week.

World number 15 Daria Kasatkina fought back from a set down to Anna Kalinskaya on Wednesday to reach successive quarter-finals in 2024 after last week’s hammering by eventual Brisbane runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. The Russian should be winning this match in straight sets at her best, and she leads Siegemund 2-1 in their tour-level head-to-head, but take Siegemund to earn at least a set in her current vein of habitual winning.
