THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Katie Boulter is enjoying the form of her career right now, setting a career-high WTA world ranking of 27th after winning the San Diego 500 in March. The Brit is far from her best on clay, with very little experience of the surface at tour-level, but she found her feet in a straight-sets victory over Clara Burel two weeks ago to help Great Britain to a 3-1 victory over France in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers. 19-year-old Robin Montgomery grabbed a hugely impressive win over Elina Avanesyan on her debut in Madrid, conceding just four games to justify her wildcard. The American enjoyed some success on clay on the ITF circuit last summer to bring about as much experience in these conditions as Boulter into their first encounter and this could end up a proper battle as a result. Boulter’s game should be slightly more effective in Madrid’s high altitude than elsewhere on clay but taking her to earn at least a set looks the suitably cautious move here.

TIP: KATIE BOULTER TO WIN A SET
