World number 17 Karolina Pliskova got het Miami Open campaign underway with little fuss in a straight-sets victory over Xinyu Wang. The former world number one reached the round of 16 at Indian Wells last week before a three-set defeat to Maria Sakkari, whom she beat the tournament before at the Dubai Masters before injury saw her withdraw from the quarter-finals. Pliskova beat fellow Czech Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets in the first round of Dubai to extend her lead in their head-to-head record to 3-0 but Vondrousova looks increasingly dangerous on her return from injury. The 23-year-old is currently ranked at world number 103 but she is no doubt playing top 20 tennis right now after an assured straight-sets victory over Veronika Kudermetova. Former world number 14 Vondrousova has never taken a set from Pliskova before but performances suggest taking her to earn at least one here is the suitably cautious way to avoid siding with an overall winner here.
