THE PREDICTION
This should be a robust and entertaining scrap between world number 11 Karen Khachanov and number 48 Lorenzo Sonego, both of whom are no stranger to a marathon match. 27-year-old Khachanov is an excellent all-courter who has reached the semi-finals in each of his last two Grand Slams, at the US Open last summer and Melbourne this January, and he can emulate his best run in Paris with a victory here. The Russian came back from an early scare to beat Constant Lestienne in five set sin the first round and he was in a real battle with Thanasi Kokkinakis, saving himself from another five-set slog by winning their fourth-set tiebreak on Friday. 28-year-old Sonego is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests but he has made great strides to repair it in recent weeks. A brilliant comeback from two sets down to upset seventh-seed Andrey Rublev on Friday backs up two very strong results so far in Paris and he is the more comfortable of two handy clay-courters in these conditions.
Khachanov leads their head-to-head 2-1 but the pair have a win apiece on clay from Monte-Carlo and Rome in 2019. Khachanov has been reliable at Grand Slams recently and backing him to earn at least two sets could be the most sensible way to avoid picking an outright winner. Alternatively, take this match to see at least a tiebreak with one coming in each of their last two meetings.
