THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Kaia Kanepi won a first-set tiebreak in a tight contest with Naomi Osaka before the Japanese was forced to retire in the second set. The win is extra impressive for 37-year-old Kanepi after she lost the Citi Open final on Sunday from a set up as she suffered an injury and required treatment in a three-set defeat to Liudmila Samsonova. The Estonian has been enjoying one of her best-ever seasons on tour, with runs to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and several big-name scalps taken so far. World number eight Garbine Muguruza is likely to be another as she continues to struggle with a severe confidence issue this season. The Spaniard ended last year as the WTA Finals champion for a second time but she takes a poor 8-12 record into the Canada Masters and a two-match losing streak since mid-June. Kanepi and Muguruza share a 1-1 head-to-head record after the Estonian beat Muguruza in three sets at Roland-Garros back in June and backing the veteran to win outright here seems a reasonable risk.
