THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Jordan Thompson finally won his maiden ATP title at the Los Cabos Open two weeks ago, setting a career-high ATP world ranking of 32nd for his tireless efforts over the past 12 months as he enjoys the form of his life. The Aussie lost to Aleksandar Kovacevic in three sets last week in Acapulco but considering he was forced to play a singles final and both his doubles semi-final and final on the same day in Los Cabos it is a small miracle that he is fit to play at all.
19-year-old Juncheng Shang could well capitalise on any signs of fatigue as an up-and-coming teenager with bundles of energy and an entertaining game that could draw neutrals to his cause. The Chinese brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 139th into Indian Wells but a brilliant upset over Yoshihito Nishioka in three tight sets in qualifying is proof that he is currently playing at a much higher level. Shang and Thompson will meet for the first time at tour level on Wednesday but they have claimed a win apiece on the Challenger circuit, with Shang earning at least a set in each. Take that option here to avoid a tricky result, with Thompson’s form a little unknowable after such relief.
