THE PREDICTION

World number 39 John Isner beat Emilio Gomez with a customary tiebreak on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Dallas Open without yet dropping a set. The 37-year-old became the first man in the Open Era to win 500 tiebreaks with a 10-8 result over Gomez, setting a record that looks unlikely to ever be matched. Isner plays a reduced schedule these days but the home favourite will always find time for tournaments on US soil, on which he has won 14 of his 16 career titles. 24-year-old J.J. Wolf will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 37th after stunning Frances Tiafoe from a set down on Friday. The American reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in Melbourne last month and he is one match away from making his second tour final in five months after finishing runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Firenze Open last October. Wolf’s victory over Tiafoe was no accident and the younger home hopeful looks the reasonable favourite to find a way past Isner here. However, take Wolf to earn at least a set and add at least one tiebreak in the match to leave the victor up to chance.
