THE PREDICTION

World number 118 Thiago Monteiro grabbed the biggest result of his career on Saturday by upsetting sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, backing-up an excellent opener over in-form Dusan Lajovic. The 29-year-old battled hard through two three-set qualifying matches to earn his place here in Madrid and it will be fascinating to see hoe he fares with some boosted confidence in his abilities on his favoured surface against world number 31 Jiri Lehecka, who is at his least effective on clay.

The high altitude in Madrid does soften the blow a little for hardcourt enthusiasts like the 22-year-old but his opening straight-sets victory over up-and-coming Hamad Medjedovic was an impressive one all the same, particularly as it was his first match on clay this season. A run to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last month saw the Czech also stun a then totally out-of-sorts Tsitsipas, and Andrey Rublev back-to-back, to prove his credentials at this level and he leads Monteiro 2-0 in their head-to-head to look resilient enough to edge through. Back Lehecka to reach the round of 16.

TIP: JIRI LEHECKA TO WIN
