THE PREDICTION

World number three Jessica Pegula raced to the first set against compatriot Danielle Collins on Saturday before a tighter second set eventually fell her way with a statement 7-0 tiebreak. The 29-year-old should be targeting nothing less than the Miami Open title here after seeing so many seeds fall from the draw, particularly as the conditions are not dissimilar from the Guadalajara Masters where she won her first WTA 1000 title late last season. Pegula also won her first WTA title in humidity at the renowned sweat-box that is the Citi Open in Washington back in 2019 and she will be backed to the hilt here by home crowds in a first meeting with Magda Linette. 31-year-old Linette produced a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January before defeat to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka but she had struggled under the pressure of suddenly being seeded so highly at tournaments since.

The Pole is up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 19th in the form of her life and she proved herself capable once again on Saturday with a brilliant three-set victory over three-time former champion Victoria Azarenka. Linette should not be underestimated here but Pegula can be backed to edge through the outright winner, probably in three sets.
