THE LOWDOWN
World number three Coco Gauff came back from a set down to beat Marketa Vondrousova on Friday, making it through to the semi-finals with two wins from three group matches. The 19-year-old also hammered Ons Jabeur in her opening match to finally claim a first win at the WTA Finals after last season’s capitulation on her debut. Gauff has enjoyed a remarkable transformation 12 months on from Fort Worth, winning her first WTA 500 in Washington before her first Masters event in Cincinnati and then her first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
World number five Jessica Pegula predictably maintained her composure on Thursday to beat Maria Sakkari comfortably despite already making it through the semi-finals with huge results over Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. Like Gauff, Pegula lost all six of her WTA Finals debut matches last season in Fort Worth as fatigue caught up with the pair of them but she looks totally dialled-in at Cancun as the apparently least-affected by challenging conditions this week. Pegula won her second Masters title in Montreal back in August and she is riding an eight-match winning streak after earning a fourth WTA title at the Korea Open last month.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a well-contested and good-natured clash between doubles partners Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, who will have to resume a delayed match together in the doubles not long after this. Gauff is certainly the more explosive of the two with a clear and present bright future at the very top of the sport but 29-year-old Pegula’s results have been nothing short of exemplary this week in Cancun and she will know how to target her opponents’ weaknesses better than anyone. Pegula beat Gauff in three sets en-route to the Canada Masters title in August to take a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head and she leads 2-0 on hardcourts to suggest taking the elder American to earn at least a set is the sensible way to lean. If forced to pick a winner, though, Gauff’s star power should shine through in a decider.
