THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Anastasia Potapova backed up her excellent career-best victory over Coco Gauff on Saturday with a brilliant straight-sets result over Qinwen Zheng to reach the quarter-finals of a Masters tournament for the first time. The Russian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 22nd no matter the outcome here but she will be dangerous for world number three Jessica Pegula given that her confidence is visibly increasing with each round. 29-year-old Pegula remains the reasonable favourite to come through this test after two strong results over Danielle Collins and Magda Linette but the pair battled through three sets at Indian Wells two weeks ago before the American came back to win. Pegula leads their tour-level head-to-head 2-0 but this looks set to be their tightest fixture yet. The conditions suit Pegula’s game, as does the likely partisan atmosphere in Miami, and so backing her to edge things outright seems a reasonable call. The shrewd move might be backing Potapova to earn at least a set, though.
